Well, we are back off science again and I have to say that it is really difficult to do the back and forth. I haven’t even touched the Social Studies that I was supposed to. I have to find a better way to integrate, however, we do team plans, so that makes it difficult to be off the course with the other teachers. Also, our schedule feels like we don’t have any real blocks of time to teach. For example, my kids come back from specialists at 11:30 and then have to leave for lunch at 12:00. That makes it really difficult to get out the manipulatives or science experiements at that time.. I have been able during the recent weeks to integrate writing with all science because we were working on informational text, so that has been a plus.
The moon

I think I have finally convinced my students that the moon’s phases are not created by a shadow cast by the earth. I had them rewrite the science book to explain the phenomenon and now they want to teach all the other 4th grade classes. On the other hand, many of them do not understand elapsed time, and I really don’t know how to teach it. Any ideas?
Paperwork

Well, I am now understanding about the teacher paperwork problem. Grades are due today and I am supposed to have done a check on all the forms in my students’ PR folders. Does anyone else out there have to check to make sure all the correct forms are in your students’ PR folders? I have never heard of this before and other teachers say that other schools don’t make the teachers do this. Just curious.
No science for now

We are off of science right now and are on Social Studies. I hate dividing up the subjects like that. I really am still struggling to find the time to do anything that is not the designated LA and Math lessons
Science class

I am having a lot of trouble finding the time for science. It is my favorite thing to teach, but reading and math are so specific, that I am running out of time.
On another note, my students were quite offended that Pluto is no longer considered a planet. They said “How are they going to tell us since Kindergarten that Pluto’s a planet and then change their minds!!” The argued that “they” could not do that. It was really interesting… It made me sure that those myths about science really exist even in fourth grade!
